I love this time of year! The heat, the fresh produce, no school! Fresh watermelon juice on a hot summer day. Now I have been drinking watermelon juice for years and I love it. Have you guys heard that new studies have shown that it can help you recover after a workout? The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports that people who sipped watermelon juice before exercising were less sore the next day.
Leslie Bonci, the director of sports nutrition at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center states, “It’s the only food that contains large amounts of L-citrulline, an amino acid that can improve oxygen delivery to the muscles”. That means that watermelon juice helps deliver more nutrients to your muscles to help them heal faster.
To make watermelon juice, just chunk up some watermelon and plop it in the blender and voila! Watermelon juice. You could also make a smoothie by blending 1 cup of frozen watermelon chunks, 1/2 cup of strawberries, and a splash of orange juice. Drink up!
