What the heck is Kombucha

During my yoga training, all my yogi friends were drinking this Kombucha tea. At the time, I was always wondering, “what the heck is that?” It smells funny, there are little floaty things in it and it is really expensive, so I stayed clear! Except when you watch seriously healthy people drink this stuff 4 times a week, you begin to wonder, am I missing something?

So, curiosity got the best of me, and I finally broke down and bought a bottle. Yikes! It’s $3 bucks a pop. First thing I learned, DO NOT SHAKE. Even with the plastic label around the lid, the tea was leaking out fast. Remember shaking the two liter bottles or coke cans and then opening, this is the same only more extreme and the scent is not that inviting coming out of the bottle. Second thing I learned, this stuff is an acquired taste. So far, I’ve tried the Gingerade, Rasberry Rush, and Pasionberry Bliss. Humm…one sip and you’re good to go, you either love it or hate it and there is no in between.
So, what the heck is it? {from the website}
Kombucha is alternately known as a Chinese tea, a plant, or a mushroom. But it’s not really any of these. It’s a living culture of beneficial microorganisms, and in Kombucha’s case, the whole is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts! Our Kombucha is delicately cultured – some liken it to fermentation – for 30 days. During this period, essential nutrients form like active enzymes, viable probiotics, amino acids, antioxidants and polyphenols. All of these combine to create an elixir that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality. Kombucha has been used for hundreds of years throughout the world as a daily health tonic. The culture resembles a light brown, tough, gelatinous disk—and because it’s a living, growing entity, it can regenerate and create new cultures with every batch. In fact, GT’s Kombucha and Synergy are made from Kombucha cultures that are descendants of the original culture GT grew to create his first bottles.

What’s so healthy about it?
You can read more about that here, but, the short story seems to be that it will benefit your immune & digestive systems, along with active enzymes, viable probiotics, and amino acids.
So, what’s my opinion?
Honestly, I am still trying to decide if I like the drink or not!!  We don’t have a Whole Foods near me, so, when I’ve had the opportunity to buy one, I usually do.  I like the fizzi-ness of the drink, it takes me all day to finish a bottle and it’s by far the most unique thing I’ve ever drank!   Also, still not sure that this is really healthy for me, or if it’s just another “healthy” drink being marketed to health conscious people like me.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?  Good or bad, I’d like to hear it.
